Bio Engineering Environmental Engineering Nuclear & Radiology Engineering Energy Engineering

The teaching communities should constantly change their existing curricula and link it to the existing wave of knowledge. The word engineering is derived from the Latin word ingeniare means to design or to create. Although the New Oxford Dictionary of English (1999) defines engineering as the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines and structures and technology as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purpose, especially in industry, to-day it is no longer possible to draw any such dividing line. This perhaps has prompted the use of the nomenclatures Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Master of Technology (M.Tech) along with the traditional ones, namely, Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) and Master of Engineering (M.E).

Lets explore one of these new courses as emerging branches of engineering and discuss each in brief.

Bio Engineering And Biomedical Engineering : A four year college degree is needed for biomedical engineering work. Many biomedical engineers have degrees in chemical or electrical engineering, but also take many of  pre-med classes. Many get graduate degrees, and some continue on to medical school and get M.D.
Biomedical engineers work in different areas of medicine focusing on various ways that technology can be used to treat or alleviate biological or medical problems. Some look at how different substances are processed in the body and generate medicines to enhance those processes. Others focus on developing materials that will promote healing or that can replace worn or injured body parts. Some biomedical engineers specialize in electronics or mechanics that have medical applications.

Environmental Engineering Environmental science and engineering is becoming an interesting career option because of the increase in consciousness about the environment. Environmental scientists and engineers are now playing the important role of the guardians of the environment. Coupled with tremendous economic development, India has also witnessed a high degree of environmental pollution. The onus now lies on the environmental engineers and scientists to make India tread the path of sustainable development. Candidates willing to build a career in this field may opt for a formal training program or course. There are quite a number of institutes that offer environmental science & engineering career courses in India.

Environmental engineers after completion of their studies can step into career and jobs as an professionals in water treatment and pollution control. The can also work with consultants which provides consultancy for projects in areas like health-based air quality index, atmospheric dispersion of pollutants, air pollution monitoring and control, drinking water supply, heavy metal pollution, industrial waste treatment, biological processes, biosorption, virology, environmental systems modeling, etc

Nuclear and Radiological Engineering : The undergraduate curriculum in nuclear and radiological engineering is structured to meet the needs of both the student who contemplates employment immediately after graduation and the student planning to pursue graduate study. This branch of engineering that deals with the production and use of nuclear energy and nuclear radiation. The multidisciplinary field of nuclear engineering is studied in many universities. In some it is offered in a special nuclear engineering department; in others it is offered in other departments, such as mechanical or chemical engineering. Primarily, nuclear engineering involves the conception, development, design, construction, operation, and decommissioning of facilities in which nuclear energy or nuclear radiation is generated or used.

Modules which are generally covered in Nuclear and Radiology Engineering are : Orient to Nuclear Plasma Radio Engineering , Energy Systems , Introduction to Radiation Protection , Independent Study , Nuclear Power Engineering , Nuclear Power Economy & Fuel Management , Plasma Laboratory, Plasma Engineering, Materials in Nuclear Engineering , Nuclear Engineering Materials Lab , Imaging With Ionizing Radiation. Etc.

Energy Engineering :  Energy Engineering course deals with fundamentals of energy. This engineering involves integrated skills from other engineering fields like mechanical, civil, electronics, mining and chemical engineering, pretro chemical this enables the students to be inducted from all these fields and subsequently go into these fields once they graduate. Although, there are not many institutes that offer undergraduate programmes for energy engineering, specialization at the Master's level is very well received in the industry.

The masters course focuses on three major areas how to improve conventional sources of energy, renewable sources of energy and non-conventional sources of energy.

The course also incorporates energy conservation and energy management in industry. It aims to prepare students to estimate energy consumption pattern in the industry and master commercial applications involving energy audit. Also incorporated in it are a study of energy systems design and computational fluid dynamics.
